^I agree entirely. I didn't think a soft interior was under all of that glitter and arrogance, either. I really like how he's evolved. I quite like Magnus. =)

Even though I really don't like how Clary acts in this scene, I love these two quotes:

"He moved toward [Clary], almost tripping over his feet -- Jace, who never stumbled, never tripped over anything, never made an ungraceful move."

"'I thought that part of my heart was broken,' [Jace] said, and there was a look on his face as he spoke as if he were surprised to hear himself saying these words, saying my heart."

Both are from page 182 in CoA. I love them because they show, like that quote did for Magnus, Jace's soft interior and how much he really loves Clary, how he lets down his sarcastic exterior in her presence. <3 And then Clary had to go and ruin it all. *grumbles*

Really, I've always seen Magnus as an angsty, soft-hearted character.
He's 300 years old. He's seen a lot. He's lost people. He's the kind of person that's really breaking underneath the glitter and the bright smiles. I can't help but picture him as selfless, loyal, caring, and a bit vulnerable - and that means Cassie wrote him really well.

Magnus really does care about Alec, which can totally open him up. When I got to that scene there was actually a bit of an element of 'finally!' for me. xD Finally we get to see Magnus open up. Finally we get to see how deeply he cares. I really get the feeling Magnus would die for Alec.

Just my two or three cents on Magnus's character in that scene.

That's one not mentioned that I love...also many of the other ones mentioned already... especially:

"A regrettable choice of words," muttered Magnus :]

This is one of my favorites that didn't make it.

Clary: Maybe you're afraid of the dark? We could lock you in the basement.
Alec: I'm a demon hunter. Clearly, I'm not afraid of the dark.
Clary: But you could be.
Alec: But I'm not.

Or something like that

I'm surprised no one came up with my personal favorite.
