| Basic rundown: This is when we first see Clary's home life and the first time we meet her mother and Luke. We also get to see more of the friendship between Simon and Clary. We also get our first glimps of Magnus and our first introduction to Madame Dorothea, And Simon also drops the hint about Clary's mom possibly being different because of the weird scars all over her body that for some reason Clary couldn't see.
What did you think when you heard Simon mention the scars on Clary's mom? Did you think it would be important later or or did you just push it out of your mind almost as fast as it got there? When Clary first saw Magnus but brushed it off as Madame Dorothea's cat did you think the situation was slightly odd? Or did you react just like Clary and push it out of your mind? Did you find anything odd with all of the sudden weird things that Clary started to see or did you just think she was losing her mind? Please only serious discussions in here and try to answer each question and dicuss your different perspectives. And remember to be respective of each other and each other's opinions |

| Okay, let's get this discussion moving... I definitely thought the scars had significance right off the bat. It was a little piece of information that I filed away into my mind until I could read further into the book and perhaps make sense of it all. When Clary first saw Magnus, I completely dismissed it. I didn't even realize that Magnus had "cat's eyes" until I read CoB for the second time. |

| When Simon was talking about Jocelyn's scars, my first thought was that she was physically abused at some point in her life. I thought Clary couldn't see them, because of those stories of children not knowing that they or someone in their family is being abused because for them, it is the norm. Then, when I found out that she was a Shadowhunter, I realized that it was a simpler explanation then mine. As for Magnus, I didn't even realize that! I had to go back and reread Chapter 2! |

| I am still conffused about the scars. XD. Okay, so when you draw rune markings, are they like, thin pencil lines, or are they like the ones we saw on the shirtless boy on the cover of CoB? Like, thick and complicated. Because if they are thick, and then when they bur away or are used they leave a scar, that is a think scar. Unless it is just a shiny piece of flesh like you would get when you burn yourself? Because right now I am picturing the kind of scar you would get if you were to cut yourself with a knife deeply -- you would just get a thin ppink line. So what kind of markings are they? Thin like pencil lines, or thick like on the covers? And then leading into what kind of scars? Thick shiny ones like a burn, or thin pink ones like from a deep knife cut? Magnus I did not catch at all. In fact, that entire passage I did not catch. When Clary said "she didn't look at the old man for long, in case he sprouted wings, or grew a pair of arms out of his head" I was like ..... what? So I really didn't get it until I read the book a second time. |

| When Simon mentioned the scars, I figured it had to be somewhat important, but I didn't really have a clue what to make of it. I'm actually a little confused about the scars too. Like do you always get a scar after you get a mark or do only some leavae scars? Because it seems that sometimes there are scars and sometimes there aren't. Also I thought that Clary couldn't see her mom's scars because she lost her sight, so how would Simon be able to see them if he didn't have the sight? As for Magnus, that part was a little confusing. Like I didn't know if she saw a cat or if she actually did see a person so I completely forgot about it until Clary mentioned that she'd seen him. |

| I actuly wrote the Scars off, but i remembered Magnus. Right before, Clary over heard Luke and Jocelyn taking about a "Bane" who is in Tanzania. I thought that when she saw him, he was the Bane Person, goin to talk to Jocelyn |

I always figured that since Clary had a block on her mind and Simon didn't, that was why she couldn't see them. The scars are visible to everyone, but Clary can't see them because of the block. That's how I saw it. The first time I read it, I don't think I really really caught that she had seen a man and then a cat. I think it kind of confused me a little, so I didn't think too much about it. Then rereading it all the times I have has let me catch things like his cat eyes, so it doesn't confuse me anymore. But the scars, I did make sure I remembered. All these strange things were happening to Clary, so her not knowing about scars that Simon has always seen had to be another strange thing. |

| I didn't even think about the cat until they finally met Magnus and he explained that he was there the day Clary's mom disappeared. As for the scars that Simon could see but she didn't, I think it was because she wasn't really observant of her because the block on her mind so that she couldn't remember, whereas Simon tends to pay attention to everything. Hmmm I thought that everytime they drew a rune on their bodies that it permanently leaves a white scar? I'm wondering though is whether once they drew the rune, will the power of the rune remain or they have to keep drawing the same rune everytime they need it? |

| The runes eventually fade as they have to keep on drawing the runes on them before they go into battle, etc. |

| And then there are those that are permanent. Oh, and when Luke is talking to Clary about what she is reading, isn't it something kind of fanciful? Because I thought that Jocelyn never let her read stuff like that. And then Luke says something like "is that your mother's?" Or something like that. It confused me as to why she would be reading that. |
