Chapter One: Pandemonium

The basic run down: This chapter is where we are first introduced to Clary - Simon - Jace - Blue Haired Boy - Alec and Isabelle.

What were your thoughts on this chapter? What were your thoughts as you were reading this for the first time? What were your first impressions of each character in this chapter? What's your favorite quote from this chapter?

My first thought: Blue haired boy sounds awesome! I bet he's cute...I hope he's a big character.

I think I suspected he wasn't a good guy because of the way they describe how he reacts, freaks me out don't really know why

This chapter has one of the best quotes of the series in my opinion, Simon says:

When I read this I cracked up laughing. One of our first examples of Clary not paying any attention to Simon.

That line was Brilliance! Oh my gosh. That was one of the best lines of Simon. XDDDD

I also, thought that the blue-haired boy and Clary were going to kick it off. I was so expecting it. Like, she already thought he was cute and I was like and he's a deamon.... kinky..... lol. And then he dies and I was like "What?!" XD. I was SO not expecting the guy she loves to be Jace.

Like part of me REALLY started to invest myself in the blue hair kid, like I was already developing theories on and about him, then I found out he was a demon and I remembered reading the back of the book and it said she meets Shadowhunters and gets involved into their world, so I kind of expected that he wasn't going to last long after that.

I did however wonder which of the boys she was going to fall for, since it's pretty much inevitable when it comes to these stories. For a little while I really thought it might have been Alec that she was going to fall for and not Jace. But of course I even thought that just maybe she'd end up in some torrid love affair stuck in between both of them. Well at least at this is what was going through my mind when I was first reading this chapter.

I just read far to much into things, but we all knew that didn't we Laughing

I actually thought that Alec totally had the hots for Clary. That was why he was all negativity towards her. Because he liked her.

But before that, with the blue haired deamon, i honestly thought that once the "two mysterious men in Black" showed up I was like, "Okay, So the girl is obviously gonna die. No chance she is going to live. Those two guys are probably deamons, and one of 'em is gonna go." XD. I don't think I have ever been that wrong about a book before. In the first chapter no less. XDDD

When I was reading the part where it was from the blue haired kids perspective, I was was thinking, "Ooh! Look! I'm getting too know the central evil character!" and then, poof, he was inverting on himself, to go be no longer dead in another dimension.

And yes, I completely thought that Isabelle was about to get murdered.
I was almost in shock when she wasn't, because I was so prepared. Good

I remember first reading about how Clary thought that the blue-haired guy was cute, and I think to myself, "Oh, is this the Jace guy that I hear Brittany (my friend) raving about constantly?"

And then I find out he isn't Jace....And Jace is hotter than the nameless blue-haired demon dude. So at that point, when I finally find out that the blue-hair guy is evil, it's like, Oh. Yeah, well, he's not Jace, so he can go ahead and die and see if I care.

I was very engrossed in it, at that point...

I definitely thought that Clary and Alec would end up together too and I was definitely surprised when the blue-haired kid died.

There is one thing in this chapter that I recently noticed and need to get someone's opinion on. So, on pg5 Clary is watching the blue-haired guy and she thinks this: "There was something about the way that he moved that reminded her of something..." That sort of stumped me. Do you think that's supposed to be like foreshadowing to the fact that Clary is part of that world? Like maybe she saw a similar demon once... Or maybe could it be something else?

.... I remember no such thing. lol. To be truly honest, I actually let all the little tid bits slip by. Like, the litttle foreshadowings. Which is why whenever somebody goes "It was SO predictable! I knew from the very start." I am always like "Whaaaaaaaa? How did you see that coming?!" "Well you see on page 274 third line down and page 689 7th paragraph blah blah" XD. I am so utterly oblivious to everything.

But you could be right. I think maybe that was what it was. Her thinking she saw another demon before and the blue haired guy reminded her of it. Maybe.

I thought that the Blue haired guy was gunna kidnap Clary and/or Simon, then the two 'knife weilding hoolgans' (if you don't get it read page19) burst in and saved them. But that didn't happen. I liked the Blue haird dude, and i was sad when Jace killed him. I think, even though he was an evil Demon, he would of made a better, more conterversial, love intreset then Jace. Well at least for a little while though

Finally someone else who was surprised when it wasn't Clary and Alec that ended up together!! I'm finally not alone Smile

I didn't remember reading that until you said something, but now that you mention it I did find that rather odd. I think if it was foreshadowing it was probably just meant to show that she was seeing what he truly was. And that might have been the first hint of the block in her mind starting to waver.

Plus the familiarity could have just been from her childhood - we do see later on that Clary did have periods as a child when she saw faeries and such, like when Magnus's block would start to wear off. So she'd probably seen a demon before at some point in her life, so that might have been the familiarity. That's just an idea tho

When I read about the blue-haired guy I was reminded of a movie character called Keenan. The movie was "Playing by heart", and there he has blue hair and meets Angelina Jolie in a club in L.A. at the beginning. When I read the book I had the feeling Cassandra Clare was describing him.
