PostSubject: Blue is for Nightmares Series by Laurie Faria Stolarz   Mon Jun 09, 2008 11:48 pm

I know Katy and I have both read and LOVED this series. Me being a bum I'm just going to copy and paste the description from the back of the first book in here to give you the idea of what the books are about.
Quote:
It begins with the dreams. White lilies, the death flower. Being chased through the woods, knowing she cannot outrun her pursuer forever. Visits from the spirit of a girl who was murdered. Threats and taunts from an unseen assailant.

But that’s only the start. When the dreams begin to spill over into Stacey’s waking life, that’s when the nightmare really begins.

Stacey's junior year at boarding school isn't easy. She's not the most popular girl at school, or the smartest, or the prettiest. She's got a crush on her best friend's boyfriend, and an even darker secret that threatens to ruin her friendships for good. And now she's having nightmares again. Not just any nightmares – these dreams are too real to ignore, like she did three years ago. The last time she ignored them, a little girl died. This time they're about Drea, her best friend who's become the target of one seriously psycho stalker. It started with weird e-mails and freaky phone calls. Now someone's leaving Drea white lilies – the same death lilies that have been showing up in Stacey's dreams. Everybody thinks it's just a twisted game . . . until another girl at school is brutally murdered. There are no witnesses. Worst of all, no one has a perfect alibi. With everyone as a potential suspect, Stacey turns to the one secret weapon she can trust – the folk magic taught to her by her grandmother. Will Stacey's magic be strong enough to expose the true killer, or will the killer make her darkest nightmares come true?

There are 4 book so far in the series, but the author is talking about working on a 5th. A HUGE warning - DO NOT read the backs of any of the books before you finish the prior book. I accidently picked up and read the back of the 4th book before I finished the 3rd one, and well - It made it SUPER hard for me to finish the 3rd book since I didn't want to see this one thing happen.

I liked all of the different characters - and how there is pretty much one of everyone. Plus every time you think there couldn't possibly be anymore twists or turns she manages to pull another one on you.

Plus they are mysteries of sorts that are mixed in with a wiccan theme - and the mysteries and problems aren't easy to figure out until you get to the end of the book. Like with the first book you start to almost suspect everyone other than Stacey of killing that girl and stalking her best friend. And once you get to the end she fits everything together so perfectly that you feel like an idiot for not seeing it sooner.

Plus I think it's a good mixture of mystery but it also has a TON of the supernatural element that I like so much.

I finished Blue is For Nightmares a few days ago. Unfortunately, the most adequate bookstore is about an hour and a half away, I can't get the other ones yet.

But I thought it was really good. It was perfectly suspensful, and it made me suspect everyone, which is always fun. It only took me about four hours to finish it, so I was pleased. Smile

My town is TINYYY. The nearest big city of Jackson, which is anywere from an hour or so drive to an hour and a half, depending on traffic and such. It's kinda lame. And then of course there's Nashville, which has all kinds of bookstores, but it's about two hours or more.

I bought the second one today. Very Happy
I'm about four chapters in right now, I should be done by tomorrow. So for it's good. Something about me wants to like Chad, but I just can't. And Drea...ugh. Her too. I have people issues, I guess. Razz

EDIT
Okay, I just finished it.
Chad and Drea are...okay, I guess. They're both cool.

It sounds interesting but it reminds me too much of A Great And Terrible Beauty.... You know what? I should really post a thread about that series.

Anyway. Something really weird happens in the first chapter. Girl has to go to boarding school. Has tons of mysterious dreams. Get's visited by a strange boy. Seriously creepy stuff goes on. Magic. A different realm. Yadda Yadda. XD. Heard it all before.

Well... let's just [for the sake of my point] forget the fact that A Great And Terrible Beauty takes place in London..... year 1895. lol. But it really is a spectacular series.

And since you know books and it sounds like it, I have a dilema. Tomorow I have my final day of exams, but after that I have all of summer.

See... I have been noticing that my obsession for Twilight is kind of dying out. Which sucks considering I am writing a fanfic for it. So what I am planning is taking my mind off of the book by reading other good ones. This is where CoB came in. I bought Cob and CoA and The Host on the day The Host came out [I have been counting down for two months for the realease of Host] but I am done reading CoB. So I need a new series. A really good one. One that will hook me and keep me reading till 5 in the morning. Yeah. Think you can help me out?

Honestly as a reader of both The Gemma Doyle Triolgy and these books I can tell you that they aren't similar at all - the situations are WAY different and the characters are very different. So I would recomend reading this one.

For starters there is no dramatic death or sudden visions, she's grown up wiccan, and a trained witch by her grandmother. So when everything starts happening it's not like some shock for her or anything, she sort of has an understanding about what's going on. But the dreams (aka visions) don't give her specifics, just clues she has to figure out to prevent the bad things from happening.

Which she is not always successful at figuring out. Something I also found as a welcome change from the usual stories where they always eventually figure everything out and they just so happen to do it in the nick of time. In these stories she's not always successful and she doesn't always figure out things before the bad stuff happens.

I was on the fence about reading this series for a long time - only because I get really tired of the same stories over and over again, just with different names but the same basic ideas. So I completely understand where you are coming from, but once I finally did pick these up and start to read them I found that they are very different and are a very interesting read.

I'll post a seperate topic for The Gemma Doyle Series so we can discuss those books there Smile

Hmm...... Sounds good actually. I might pick it up. But did you like it? Like for you, was it a "Oh yeah. A fairly interesting read" Or was it more of a "OMG. Fantastionicaal!!!!!! Loved it!" Cause I need a series that gets me going. not just 'interesting' or 'good' but 'really really really good.'
